Cycle Technician/Hire Assistant

Responsible to: Bike Hire Manager
Salary: National Living Wage or above, dependent on age and experience
Hours: Flexible part time role, up to 42.5 hours per week 8.30 – 5.30 including weekends
Start Date: March/April 2024

Total Adventure Bike Hire is a busy cycle hire company based in Windermere, with a second venue in Bowness-on-Windermere.

We are looking for a confident and enthusiastic person to join our hardworking team, we offer a great job working with good people and in the perfect environment to enjoy getting out and exploring on two wheels when the days work is done.

About the role

You’ll be maintaining bikes to a high standard, as well as assisting the team in dealing with the day to day running of the bike hire side of our business.

Primarily you will find yourself assisting customers with rentals, involving sizing, safety briefings, providing route information and ensuring that our clients have a great experience with us from start to finish. In the workshop we will need bikes maintained to the standard that means they are always available, and that the customers enjoy our equipment as much as our service. Most days will end with cleaning and the safety checking bikes, ready for the fleet to roll out again the following morning.

There will be some requirement in the role to be involved in some office based activity, including checking emails from time to time, communicating with customers and working in the booking system.

This is a seasonal, part-time role, primarily focused around our busy weekends, with scope to become a year round role for the right candidate. During peak season and holiday periods there will be more opportunities for additional work during the week.


Essential things you need in your personal toolkit
  • Demonstrable mechanical experience working with modern bikes, both standard and electric
  • Experience of positive customer service in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to work both independently on your own and effectively in a team
  • A passion for sport and physical activity, and for providing sports and accessible activities to a range of people with varying needs
  • Proficient writing skills and computer literacy
  • Great listening skills with the ability to speak clearly and confidently
  • Friendly and patient with the ability to stay calm under pressure
  • Excellent time management skills and attention to detail

Desirable things to have
  • Experience of operational delivery in an activity centre/ similar work environment
  • Cytech mechanic training
  • British Cycling trail cycle leader award (or equivalent)


On joining the team, you need be good at these things straight away!
  • Safety checking bikes, performing routine maintenance, diagnosing and repairing issues on bikes as they appear
  • Supporting customers who are taking part in activities
  • Meeting, greeting and keeping those customers happy
  • Ensuring that the premises and equipment are maintained and used appropriately

After some coaching, support and training, you will get good at
  • Ensuring the live booking system is up to date
  • Performing a wider range of repairs on bicycles
